SCISSORMEN: Jinx Breakers

Ted Drozdowski's fascination with the guitar and his performances with John Sinclair has resulted in an explosion of sounds that work with more ferocity than his former band, "The Devil Gods", and push musical boundaries that Drozdowski probably couldn't venture off towards while backing up poet/White Panther activist Sinclair. "Death Letter" certainly isn't a "Love Letter", well it is, but it isn't...the slide guitar generates a variety of energies while drummer Rob Hulsman keeps pace with Ted's rage.

Produced by Billy Conway, mixed by Tom Dube and engineered by Conway and Dube at Hi-N-Dry in Cambridge the CD has a genuine sound and must have been a lot of fun to record. "Tupelo" keeps the angst flowing, the vocals sounding like Bob Dylan gone hardcore blues. "Jessie Mae" has that "Love In Vain" Robert Johnson-styled lament while "John The Revelator" is some kind of rockabilly invading the new wave, to good effect. On an episode of Visual Radio Ted played the guitar without accompaniment and displayed a real passion for the art, something missing in so many of the new bands playing out today. Oh they have the attitude and a gloss from schooling or hours and hours of practice, but there's something missing in the Boston music scene of 2009 that the old school inhabitants understood and continue to convey. Both "Revelator" and sixth and concluding song, "Jumper On The Line", have that essence and Scissormen's Jinx Breakers conjures up a good bit of magic that the unaware would not be expecting. The cover doesn't give a hint of the chaos inside...guess you can't judge a book...or cd...by its cover.
